Energy Efficient Pool Equipment
A variable speed pool pump is a pump that can significantly reduce energy consumption.   The pool reduces your energy costs by running at a higher speed during the time when the temperatures are hotter and the pool would be used more.

With a variable speed, the pump is always running, but during the evening hours, it runs at a lower speed and consumes less electricity.   Also, during the evening hours, the electricity rates are lower.

Variable speed pumps have been available for more than ten years, so the technology continues to improve, but they are going to be more expensive than a single speed  pump. The advantage is that most of the extra cost for the equipment can be recouped within the first year of using the pump.

Run your Pool Pump in the Evenings
If you don’t have a variable speed pump or it isn’t currently in the budget, then run your pool more during the hours when the energy costs will be lower than in the heat of the day.  This will help to save on

With a single speed pump, you can still use a basic pool timer and set it to run for at least 8 hours of the day.   You will save on your swimming pool operating costs. But, the savings won’t be as significant as with a variable speed pump.

Install a Pool Safety Cover
Another way to save on pool costs is to install a pool safety cover and have the pool covered for about 5-6 months of the year.   You will save on swimming pool operating costs during those months because the pool is closed.   Also, we recommend continuing to run the pump even when the pool is covered.   You will save on the opening costs because the water was still being filtered during the colder months.   The Pool Professional won’t have to use as many chemicals to get the pool clean and clear for the swimming season.

Install an Automatic Pool Cover
If the pool has already been constructed, then it may not be possible to install an automatic pool cover.   Installing an automatic pool cover is expensive due to the technology involved.   And, this type of cover is installed into the concrete deck and it would be very expensive to have to break up your pool deck in order to install a cover that you can close immediately when the pool is not in use.

With an automatic pool cover, it can be expensive to repair when there are any issues.   Also, there is a limited number of manufacturers that make these covers, so they are just naturally going to cost more money.

LED Lighting
Switch to energy-efficient LED lights for your pool area.    LED lights save on energy because more of the electricity is actually converted to light.   With traditional incandescent pool bulbs, a higher portion of the electricity is lost as heat.

Water Conservation
Turn off any features on the pool that consume extra water.  Running extra water is always going to cost more money.   This would include fountains, waterfalls or any other water features/bubblers.   Our personal pool has three waterfalls.   We only run the waterfalls primarily during the swim season. We also run them during the winter, if the temperatures are dropping below freezing, so that the pipes don’t freeze.   The majority of the time, we don’t run the water features.

With water features, you can also save money by making sure that the  features are properly designed.   If the plumbing pipes are the right size for the water flow, that will help to save money on the operational costs  by minimizing water waste.
